The Kentucky Department for Education has developed a vision that states, “Every child, regardless of parentage or poverty, geography or location, will receive a world class education to prepare for a productive adult life, continuing education, and responsible citizenship.” In keeping with this vision, the Franklin County Health Department developed the Working on Wellness (WOW) School Wellness Program as a vehicle for ensuring the health of our future by teaching our children healthy lifestyle choices today. During the school year, our health educators visit the 4th and 5th grade classes monthly at each of our public elementary schools and two of our private schools. Many of our activities come from personal research or science-based curriculum provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that cover the topics of:
Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs
Decision Making Skills
Self Esteem
Hygiene and Puberty
Physical Activity
Nutrition
At the end of the school year, the 4th and 5th grade students take the information and activities they have learned through the course of the program and recreate activities to present to their schoolmates during an interactive wellness carnival. For more information about this program please contact the Community Health Education team at 564-5559.
