The Longest Day of Play

As many of you are aware Kentucky’s burden of disease is among the highest in the nation. According to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Kentucky ranks 5th in the nation for heart disease mortality, 6th in the nation for diabetes-related mortality, 12th in the nation for stroke mortality and 2nd in the nation for inactivity. Being overweight and obese substantially increase one’s risk of developing many chronic diseases. In fact, an estimated 400,000 deaths per year in the United States are caused by excessive weight.

In an effort to increase physical activity among adults and youth in our county, the Franklin County Health Department sponsors a program called “The Longest Day of Play” (LDOP). Last year we had approximately 1,200 people attend their event, which invited families to come out and “play” for an evening. Numerous activities were made available for all age groups to encourage the incorporation of physical activity in their daily routines.

If your organizations, businesses or community group would like to join us in showcasing the tremendous and varied opportunities to engage in physical activity that are available to the residents here in Franklin County, please contact Debbie Bell or Judy Mattingly at (502) 564-5559.
